Following on from her commission for the Marriott Hotel in Beijing, Dawn undertook a 7 week residency at the Pickled Art Centre in Beijing working alongside local and international artists. Within this time Dawn was able to create and exhibit a new body of work using ink, tea and coal on traditional xian papers, and also acrylic paintings on linen.

This collection will be displayed at the Australian Embassy in Beijing in the coming months.

A long time student of Lao Tsu and the Tao Te Ching, along with twenty years of tai chi practice, Dawn felt at home in Beijing and loved her time painting, exploring Beijing and touring north to Cheng De, the Emperor’s winter resort with its many temples, Quing Queng Shan, a sacred taoist mountain in southern China and onto Shanghai.

The Marriot Hotel in Beijing, China now has a large pastel drawing by Dawn Csutoros in their public space. The commission was completed early September and is being installed this month.Dawn has been accepted as artist in residence at the well known Pickled Art Centre in Beijing this year. She will begin her residency on the 31st of October, continuing on until the 12th December. China is undergoing tremendous changes in economic and social life. Chinese people are living in a period that is politically more open than ever since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Along with the preparations for the 2008 Olympics, these dramatic changes have a large impact on Chinese culture and daily life.

Dawn will be immersing herself and responding to the richness, beauty and diversity of the Chinese culture. She has studied Mandarin for two years, practiced tai chi for twenty years, is a lover of taoist philosophy and Lao Tzu’s Tao te Ching and is looking forward to developing skills and creating a new body of work for exhibition early December.

Gumbalanya, Arnhamland

Dawn recently had the opportunity to visit the community of Oenpelli (Gumbalanya) in Western Arnhem Land. She spent time exploring the landscape, studying traditional rock art, visiting ancient sites and creating some drawings which subsequently turned into a series on her return to Melbourne. Dawn hopes to return to Gumbalanya early next year to further develop her painting series.
